YOI Partners with Elmont Cultural Center for First Doorknocking Get-Out-the-Vote Campaign in Elmont
On the Saturday before the General Election, our Youth Organizing Institute Fellows gathered in Elmont for a major collaboration with the Elmont Cultural Center for their first-ever doorknocking campaign to get out the vote! “Any type of doorknocking that happens in Elmont is usually political,” said Mimi Pierre-Johnson, President of the Elmont Cultural Center. “You might run into people knocking on doors today—they’re knocking on doors for candidates. But no one knocks on doors for the issues that we fight for.”
After receiving thorough training on canvassing and digital tools for fieldwork, our 3 teams of Fellows knocked on an incredible 67 doors of 199 registered BIPOC voters in Elmont—all in less than two hours. They spoke to dozens of residents, informing them of the upcoming Election Day and explaining the importance of the ballot proposals.
“It is a great thing you’re doing for us so that we know exactly who lives here and why our numbers, when we go to vote, are so low,” Mimi added, thanking our Fellows for their hard work.
