Getting Out the Vote!
This week, we partnered with Elmont Cultural Center for their first ever doorknocking campaign to get out the vote! In just an hour, our fellows knocked on nearly 70 doors of BIPOC registered voters in Elmont to encourage them to vote on Election Day and to educate them of the ballot proposals. Below, Elisee speaks on his exciting experience with doorknocking in his own community!
βHey guys, I'm Elisee Point Du Jour, my pronouns are he/him, and I'm a Fellow at YOI. Today, we did our GOTV campaign! We went around to all these houses and we gave out our palm cards on voting for November 2nd for certain ballot questions.
It's been pretty fun. Unfortunately, there are some houses where people didn't answer, but the people that did answer, they were surprisingly really welcome to knowing information. I was so surprised not to get the door slammed in my face. People really actually wanted to know what I was talking about. And it was just really fun, you know, to see people say thank you for informing me because I truly believe that they never heard the information I gave out, and it just makes me feel happy because I'm changing somebody's perspective on how they should vote. Overall, I just feel like this week was a really good success.β
